I remember this time last year, thinking “next year is going to be so much better”… and I guess in some ways it definitely has, but then in other ways, I’m not so sure… Things are definitely still weird, which might explain my recent interest in rediscovering the work of Pablo Picasso.
Something about the warped representations of the world around him seems oddly fitting these days. Anyway, when looking for inspiration for my annual pumpkin adventure, I immediately thought of the skulls that appear in many of his paintings.
DIY-wise, it’s pretty simple. I just used some pastels, cardstock, some glue (I used both hot glue and craft glue) scrap cardboard, and some black yarn. I haven’t touched pastels since my grade school art classes, so it was super fun getting my hands dirty smearing and blending the colors around. To give the skulls some depth, I created them in layers, and added little spacers that I hot glued in between. I also used some bottle caps for eyes.
I hope things are going well in your world! Stay safe and hope you have a Happy Halloween! BTW, click on the instagram post below for a fun (and so dramatic) video of the making of the picasso skull pumpkins. Also, follow me on Insta for more mundane shenanigans!
