I’ve been a fan of Poketo from wayyyy back in the day when they were doing fun little artist edition wallets. Fast forward to 2019, and it’s been amazing to watch their growth and evolution. They’ve become such an institution and a major champion for the West Coast design community. When I first heard that they were producing a book, I was super curious what it would be like.
Today, this new “baby” is officially out in the world and it’s wonderful to see that it is truly a “family” affair. Their book, titled Creative Spaces is not just another typical interiors book concentrating on a specific style. Instead, it showcases the homes and studios of creatives and how they really live and work.
I love all the smaller little vignette moments that photographer Ye Rin Mok was able to capture throughout the book. However, I think beyond the aesthetics of the spaces, what I really appreciated was the intimate insights that Angie and Ted (along with co-writer Gregory Han) were able to gain with each of these creatives. You learn a little bit about what inspires them and how they navigate the balance between work and just… living.
Because most of the people featured were their friends, they were also able to honestly share the ups and downs of each of their journeys within their chosen craft and businesses. There are 23 artists, designers, chefs, musicians, architects, and entrepreneurs featured. Many of them I’m sure you’ll recognize. Here’s a little video of Angie and Ted talking more about the book:
I don’t think I can ever get tired of getting a “sneak peek” into the lives and homes of other creative people. There’s something special in seeing where the “magic” happens, so to speak, that transcends any decor trends and can be a continual source of inspiration as you look at your own space.
Creative Spaces is out now and is published by Chronicle Books.
